His teacher was Dr. Sandra Joy Friesen, a specialist of Debussy and modern classical improvisation. He continued his studies at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada, under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Tselyakov, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, earning a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Literature, specializing in Accompaniment.
Having completed his formal studies, Mr. Yates returned to Vancouver and began teaching and performing, eventually becoming the director of the Chilliwack Academy of Music.
In 2014, he relocated to Austin Texas where he became a vital member of the musical community as a teacher, collaborative performer and composer. He currently owns North Austin Piano Studio, where he teaches over 40 students. He is a master clinician for the Houston Area Suzuki Piano Association, and annually returns to his home province of British Columbia to adjudicate music competitions. He is the Music Director for One Ounce Opera whose annual festival produces new chamber operas, selected through a competitive international submissions process. He frequently appears with other local opera companies and prominent choirs.
Mr. Yates has been composing since he was very young, but most fervently since 2017. His song cycles have been performed by Local Opera Local Artists (“LOLA”) and by Austin Chamber Music Center. His chamber opera, The Measure of Love, was premiered recently in Houston, and his pieces for solo piano and piano trio have sold internationally.
